I have a problem with alcohol. In my mid-teens, the problem with alcohol began to surface. There were overwhelming side effects from using products on my skin that contained alcohol.
At the start of college I went to see a dermatologist for acne and he prescribed two topical medicines and recommended that I purchase a particular bar soap. I read the labels and saw that none of these products contained alcohol.
In about two weeks from the start, the acne began to clear up, dark patches were gone and I noticed there was a dramatic difference in my skin. It was as though I never had acne or uneven skin. I kept this same skin care routine throughout my undergraduate years and experienced clear and beautiful skin.
Post College Years
With acne long behind me, I invested in new skin care products. My new skin care products were glamorous and exciting. I began to use a cleanser instead of a bar of facial soap. I used toner and moisturizer. All of the products were from one brand and had five star ratings. Unbeknownst to me, all of the products except for the facial wash contain alcohol. Afterall, I was done checking the labels, my acne was gone. I thought I no longer had a problem with alcohol.
Well, I soon learned that just because my acne was gone did not mean ingredients were not important. Due to my lack of knowledge of the ingredients in my glamorous new skin care products, I began to have awful burn marks on my chin. I didn’t notice this until I looked at pictures of me.
Low and behold I checked the labels and found the culprit! Alcohol! I immediately tossed those products and replaced them with new skin care products that did not contain alcohol. My skin returned to normal in less than a week. Was alcohol to blame? Should I blame it on the alcohol? Do you have a problem with alcohol? I still do. Comment below if you ever had a problem with alcohol.

You are beautiful! I have had sensitive skin my entire life and after reading this, I feel like it’s probably been the alcohol all along. Thank you for the information.

Thank you Ashley! I think there should be more information available about how skin care products that contain alcohol can cause problems for sensitive skin types like us.

I will look at my skin care products. Uneven skin tones, blotches, and spots. Wonder if alcohol is the problem. Thank you for the information. You are beautiful as is your skin!

Debra, I’m glad you are going to check your products. Usually, the benefits of a product is heavily promoted without giving thought to how certain ingredients may be the cause of irritation. Stay beautiful inside and out!!!!
